  • PhD, Enzymology & Microbiology, 1985
  • University of Havana, Cuba, Pharmaceutical Biochemistry, 1973
Research Interests:

Dr. Gonzalez’ research has both basic science and translational importance.
His laboratory’s research interest centers on:

  • The biological effects of cytokines and growth factors in cancer.
  • The role of leptin (a major adipocytokine secreted by adipose and cancer tissues) in the development of cancer

Ongoing lab research projects include:

  • Unraveling the mechanisms of leptin angiogenic effects in breast cancer
  • Involvement of leptin and IL-1 signaling in breast cancer progression
  • Role of obesity and leptin signaling in the progression of carcinogenic-induced breast cancer.
  • Targeting the HER2/neu and leptin signaling link in breast cancer
  • Combined chemoprevention of breast cancer with tamoxifen and leptin antagonists
  • Role of leptin signaling in endometrial cancer.

These investigations will take Dr. Gonzalez a step closer to translational use of leptin antagonists (LPrAs; developed in his lab) as co-adjuvant drugs for cancer chemoprevention/treatment, particularly for obese and post-menopausal women who show higher incidence of breast cancer and levels of leptin.
