William ToddWilliam (Bill) J. Todd
President, Georgia Cancer Coalition

William J. Todd serves as President and CEO of the Georgia Cancer Coalition. The vision of the Coalition is to move Georgia to the top ranks of the states in cancer care over a ten year period. Since his appointment in late 2003, he has strongly emphasized sharpening strategic focus and maximizing opportunities to leverage funding with federal and private partners.

Immediately prior to joining the Coalition, Todd was a member of Governor Sonny Perdue’s staff, serving as founding Executive Director of the Commission for a New Georgia, designed to infuse expertise from the private sector into the operations of state government to improve efficiency and effectiveness in a changed culture.

Todd was the founder of Encina Technology Ventures, an early-stage technology venture capital fund in partnership with Atlanta developer Tom Cousins. He was the founding president of the Georgia Research Alliance, a strategic partnership of the six research universities in Georgia, joined by the business community and state government. Over ten years, the Alliance raised nearly $1 billion dollars from state, federal and private sources to invest in promising programs and projects in the universities.

Todd spent his early professional career in various administrative assignments in the Emory University System of Health Care, at hospitals, clinics, and the school of medicine. Prior to heading up the Georgia Research Alliance, he was Assistant Vice President for Medical Administration at the Robert W. Woodruff Health Sciences Center.

Todd serves on the National Board of the American Cancer Society, the Board of Directors of the Georgia Chambers of Commerce, the Board of Trustees of the Georgia Tech Foundation, the Georgia Tech Alumni Association Chairman-elect, and Andrew College trustee-emeritus, as well as the Chairman-Board of the Rotary Club of Atlanta. Todd is the past President of Rotary Club of Atlanta.

Bill Todd is a 1971 graduate of the College of Management at the Georgia Institute of Technology, and attended the Institute for Educational Management at Harvard University. In 2000 he received an Honorary Doctor of Science degree from the University of Ulster in Northern Ireland. He enjoys golf, trout fishing, quail hunting, volunteer work with Habitat for Humanity and bicycling. He is an Elder at Shallowford Presbyterian Church. A fourth generation Atlantan, Todd has been named by Georgia Trend as one of the “100 Most Powerful and Influential People in Georgia” for six years.

He is married to Elizabeth Todd, a DeKalb County first grade teacher, and has two sons, one a student at Georgia Tech and one a recent graduate.

 

alan willsAlan C. Wills
Vice President and CFO

Alan C. Wills currently serves as Chief Financial Officer of the Georgia Cancer Coalition. He was named to this position in February 2006. Immediately prior to joining the Coalition, Wills served as the Director of Finance for Dekalb Regional Health System in Decatur, Georgia. Dekalb Regional Health System is a not-for-profit comprehensive health care delivery system that is comprised of Dekalb Medical Center (a 500+ bed general acute care hospital), Decatur Hospital (a 100 bed long-term care hospital, and Dekalb Medical Center at Hillandale (a 100 bed general acute care hospital). Wills has also served as the Vice-President of Finance for Grady Health System in Atlanta, Georgia. Grady Health System is a not-for-profit comprehensive health care delivery system that includes the operation of Grady Memorial Hospital (a 900+ bed academic teaching, level one trauma center), Hughes Spalding Children’s Hospital (a 50+ bed pediatric hospital), and Crestview Nursing Home (a 200+ bed skilled nursing facility). In addition, Wills has over 12 years of experience in public accounting with firms such as Price Waterhouse and Deloitte & Touche, serving clients in healthcare, not-for-profit and government as well as publicly traded companies

Wills is a 1990 graduate of Georgia Southern University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting. In addition, Wills is a licensed Certified Public Accountant.

angie pattersonAngie Patterson
Vice President and COO

Angie Patterson is the Vice President and Chief Operating Officer responsible for initiatives in survivorship, the workplace and in faith-based support as well as day-to-day operations of the Georgia Cancer Coalition. Prior to joining the Georgia Cancer Coalition, Ms. Patterson spent 17 years with BellSouth. She began her career at BellSouth in 1988 as a programmer. In 1993, Ms. Patterson became a Senior Systems Manager responsible for the retail and activations systems at BellSouth Cellular Corp. From 1997 – 2000, Ms. Patterson was the Director of the Billing Systems, Switch Interface, Fraud, Reporting and Financial Systems at BellSouth Cellular Corp. For the past 5 years, she was a Director in the BellSouth Information Technology organization.

Since 2002, Ms. Patterson has been very actively involved in many cancer volunteer organizations, such as the American Cancer Society Reach to Recovery program and Relay for Life. From 2002 – 2004, she was the President of the Network of Hope – a Breast Cancer Survivors’ organization at Northside Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. In 2002, Ms. Patterson was a Co-Founder of the BellSouth Life Counts Cancer Program, an innovative grass-roots program which provides an educational resource for persons diagnosed with cancer, and educates employees regarding cancer risks, prevention, and early detection. Ms. Patterson also chaired the Health Care team in the BellSouth Women’s Networking Alliance since 2003.

Ms. Patterson received an undergraduate degree in Computer Science from the University of Georgia.

kathy russellKathy Russell
Clinical & Research Program Advisor

Ms. Russell is highly regarded throughout the national cancer community for her many contributions. Most recently, Ms. Russell served as the Deputy to the Director and Associate Director for Planning and Administration at the Lombardi Cancer Center, a National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated comprehensive cancer center at the Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Her responsibilities during her 12-year tenure at Lombardi centered upon the day-to-day operational aspects of the center, including all clinical, research and grants administration. Prior to her work at Lombardi, Ms. Russell assumed progressively responsible senior leadership positions at the NCI. Ms. Russell served as Assistant Administrative Officer and Administrative Officer for the Clinical Oncology Program, Administrative Officer for the Biological Response Modifiers Program, and Deputy Administrative Officer for the Division of Cancer Treatment during her eight years with the NCI.

Ms. Russell has been a consulting advisor to several major organizations including the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center, the City of Hope National Medical Center, Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital. In addition, she served as a member of numerous site visit teams for the NCI’s Cancer Center Support Grant program and is a member of the Executive Committee of the Cancer Center Administrators Forum.

She has also made substantial contributions as a volunteer in the cancer community. She was a founder of Special Love, Inc., a nonprofit organization providing enriching programs to children with cancer, and The Children’s Inn at NIH, a nonprofit that provides a family-centered residence for NIH pediatric patients and their families. Since their establishment, Ms. Russell served as president and board member of both organizations.

kate canterburyKate Canterbury
Director of Research Programs

Kate Canterbury currently serves as the Director of Research Programs for the Georgia Cancer Coalition. She was appointed to this position in January, 2005, but has been with the Coalition since its inception.

Ms. Canterbury has experience directing various types of research programs such as the state’s Income Tax Check-off, which raises funds for breast cancer, prostate cancer, and ovarian cancer research, and the Distinguished Cancer Scholar program, which aids Georgia universities in recruiting top researchers and clinicians to the state.

Ms. Canterbury has a Master’s Degree in Public Administration with a specialization in Nonprofit Management from Georgia State University and a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology and Chemistry from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Kate is a member of the Destiny Fund of the Atlanta Women’s Foundation and the 2007 LEAD Class of Leadership Atlanta.

Bibby Short King
Program Director, Faith-Based Ministry & Survivorship Programs
 
 
Bibby Short King has more 27 years experience in the telecommunications industry at AT&T and BellSouth Corporation (prior to its merger). She is presently an AT&T Loaned Executive to the Georgia Cancer Coalition supporting Survivorship Programs, the Faith-Based Ministry and Corporate-based Cancer Programs.
 
A project management professional, she earned a Master’s Degree in Project Management from George Washington University and certification by the Project Management Institute.  She will graduate from the University of Alabama in 2008 with a focus in Administrative Sciences.  She is a member of Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society and of The National Society of Collegiate Scholars.
 
In the winter of 2001, Ms. King co-founded BellSouth’s Life Counts Cancer Program after losing her spouse, also a BellSouth employee, to cancer. The program benefits thousands of active and retired BellSouth employees and is being licensed to other Georgia corporations.
 
Working with the Coalition is an extension of her ongoing commitment to community service and to expanding cancer awareness.  She volunteers with Job Shadowing, Everybody Wins!, March of Dimes, American Red Cross, Peachtree Christian Hospice and the TelecomPioneers.  Ms. King is the past Region Vice President to the National TelecomPioneers, past president of Bellewood Homeowners’ Association and a founding member, and former vice president of the Georgia Colon Cancer Coalition. She is involved with numerous American Cancer Society activities and is a former member of the Department of Human Resources’ Colorectal Cancer Task Force. She has Co-Chaired the International Dia de la Mujer Latina’s executive board and recently joined the executive board of The Wellness Community of Atlanta. She is an active member of Perimeter Presbyterian Church. 

Judy Stanton
Public Relations Consultant

Judy Stanton is a seasoned healthcare public relations professional, with more than thirty years experience working to promote hospitals and health care organizations. She has served as president of both the Georgia and Florida Societies for Healthcare Marketing and Public Relations as well as president of the South Florida Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America.

In Atlanta, she has worked with Northside Hospital managing special events and the major speakers program and as Associate Director of Public Relations for Shepherd Center. She has also consulted with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, The Wellness Community, and the Unlock the Waiting List Campaign. In South Florida, she was Public Relations Director for Mount Sinai Medical Center for twelve years.

Ms. Stanton has a B.A. in Journalism and an M.Ed. from the University of Florida. She’s a neighborhood board member and volunteers for the Drake House, Temple Kehillat Chaim, and the Zaban Homeless Shelter.

Melody B. Head
Administrative Specialist


Melody B. Head is the Administrative Specialist for the Georgia Cancer Coalition. A native of Atlanta, she graduated from South Atlanta High School and continued her education at Clayton College and State University and Atlanta Technical College. She is currently studying at Atlanta Christian College, working towards a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Early Childhood Education, with a minor in developmental psychology and biblical studies. Melody comes to the Coalition from Holy Innocents Episcopal School in Atlanta, where she worked for five years as Executive/Team Administrative Assistant.
